Each year the Missions Team offers suggestions for those looking for opportunities to help others this holiday season. The Team humbly suggests the following:
The Rescue Mission
The Rescue Mission has served the homeless and poor in the love of Christ since 1887. The RM serves the homeless and poor in the love of Christ in Syracuse, Cayuga County and Broome County. While it’s now three communities, it’s still one mission. Volunteers from Vestal UMC help serve meals at the Rescue Mission once a month. Your donations will help feed these men.
National Mentoring Partnership (MENTOR)
For more than a decade, the MENTOR/National Mentoring Partnership (MENTOR), has been working to expand the world of quality mentoring. MENTOR believes that, with the help and guidance of an adult mentor, each child can discover how to unlock and achieve his or her potential. MENTOR is widely acknowledged as the nation’s premier advocate and resource for the expansion of mentoring initiatives nationwide. As such, MENTOR works with a strong network of State and Local Mentoring Partnerships to leverage resources and provide the support and tools that mentoring organizations need to effectively serve young people in their communities.
Haiti Volunteers in Mission
We continue in partnership with our brothers and sisters in Haiti. We are working together to help them to become more independent, so that they can support their teachers, schools, families and churches. Funds for Haiti VIM (Volunteers in Mission) will be used to assist volunteers from our church as they travel to Haiti in this important mission. In 2018 we had four volunteers go to Haiti from Vestal UMC. Five members of VUMC were prepared to go in November of 2019 and then again in May of 2020, but were unable to go due to civil unrest and the worldwide pandemic. Vestal UMC plans to take a team back to Haiti when it is safe to do so.
Our church continues our quest to balance our budget this year and your donations will help, not only to balance our year, but to grow our mission and ministry.
The Lord’s Table – Sarah Jane Johnson UMC
Sarah Jane Johnson UMC has been serving the needy in our community since 1986 by hosting a family meal every Tuesday. Members of Vestal UMC have faithfully helped serve for many years. Your contributions will help support the purchase of food for these meals.
Your donations can be mailed to the church at the address listed below. Please put "Advent - (name of area you are donating to)" in the memo field of your check. You can also donate online through the button below.
